Autumn in the City: Sally Hansen Fall Nail Lacquer Colors by Tracy Reese

Source: makeupandbeautyblog.com

Fall is my favorite time of year in San Francisco. It rarely gets either cold or hot in the city, with the Bay keeping the climate pretty much the same year ’round, but the brief summer we do get usually occurs in what would normally be the fall, which means t-shirts in October and sometimes even November.

It’s when autumn colors drench the city — grey buildings contrast against streets carpeted with maroon autumn leaves, as buttery autumn sunlight weaves through the high rises downtown. I love it.

I suppose my love for the city in fall explains why I’ve fallen for Sally Hansen’s new nail collection, inspired by 10 fall colors created in collaboration with clothing designer Tracy Reese. The industrial grey, black and blue shades contrast well with maroons and neutrals, as do the streets of my favorite city in the fall.

  • Alchemy – deep plum with subtle purple and gold shimmer
  • Cruel Heart – maroon with subtle gold flecks
  • Divinity – pale beige with grey flecks
  • Moonstone – white shimmer
  • Night Lily

    – maroon matte

  • Raven’s Wing – black with big silver glitter
  • The Good Earth – dark chocolate brown with subtle gold flecks
  • Torrid Bloom – matte hot pink
  • Quartz Cameleon – pale peachy- pink beige with subtle gold flecks
  • Stormy Blue – dark grey blue shimmer

At $6, these drugstore polishes are a downright steal! You get a little bit less product than you would from a Lippmann Collection shade (0.45 oz for a bottle of Sally Hansen versus 0.50 oz for a Lippmann Collection bottle), but you’re paying half the price. These colors are also durable like Lippmann polishes, clinging like that ex-boyfriend you wish would just go away.

I painted my nails with three layers for these pics, and five days later they had nary a chip. And that’s without topcoat, yo. If your nails take a beating like mine do, then definitely put one of these in your basket on your next trip to Rite Aid or the House of Tar-ghay. Update: These Sally Hansen colors will hit the shelves in September. )

How about you? Which do you like best?

Want to see these budget beauties in person? The fall 2008 Tracy Reese for Sally Hansen Salon Nail Lacquer collection anxiously awaits your arrival at your favorite drugstore.

Ahh, yes. I am so glad it’s Thursday! It looks like it’s going to be sunny today, which means I’d better find a way to de-hair my legs before I put on that dress I’ve been eyeing in my closet, LOL. Today is my “Friday,” so after work I’m treating myself to some iced tea at a cafe and a few uninterrupted minutes writing in my journal. I’m really looking forward to it!

Do you have your weekend plans yet? I may go to the movies and to dinner with my friend Cindy if I can get my work done first.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Would you wear a nail patch?

Source: makeherup.com

Introducing these new, colorful, long-wearing stickers for the nails from Sephora!

Sephora Brand Nail Patches make it easy to be glamorous. The colorful strips add shine and brilliance to nails, with zero drying time or smudging—so you can stop using brush applicators and worrying about polish that runs or spreads unevenly and takes a long time to dry.

Just stick on the patches and go—it’s that easy. Select the appropriate size for your nail, pull off the clear protective strip, and place the rounded side at the nail base. Smooth onto the nail surface, and remove the surplus by folding the nail sticker under the nail. The excess easily tears away. Remove the nail patch with traditional nail polish remover.

I don’t know how I feel about stickers for my nails.  Seems very WT if you ask me.  Anyone have any success with a product like this?

My love affair with Zoya.

I rarely ever wear polish on my finger nails, I love how it looks but I hate that by sundown on the second day of wear I have major chip issues. When I was younger I would try all different brands and topcoats only to get chips or wear at the nail ends within a day or two.

Once I had kids I just gave up painting my finger nails, with the constant hand washing and cleaning it would be impossible to keep polish on my nails right? Wrong! After Zoya offered us a special MakeHerUp trio I decided to order some myself. I painted my toes and was happy enough but one color I had ordered (Casey) was dying to be on my fingers. So last Sunday I decided to get wild and crazy and paint my fingernails. Well here I am half way through Thursday and my polish still looks amazing, 5 days later!.

I am a Zoya convert they really do have the longest lasting nail polish if you have yet to try it don’t put it off. They just might make you want to paint your finger nails again.

Summer Nail Tips!

Source: makeherup.com

manicure2_325.jpg

Get those nails ready for summer with these 4 easy nail tips!

  1. Keep them short! The season’s bright polishes look best on short nails in a ”squoval” – square with rounded edges – shape.
  2. Change it up! For a new look in no time, brush a sheer or pearly shade on top of your existing polish.
  3. Go the distance! To make a mani last, apply polish to clean, dry nails and reapply top coat every few days.
  4. Stay smooth!  File nails in one direction to avoid splitting!

Girl’s night in.

Source: makeherup.com

My daughter loves to play dress up and do “fancy girl things” as she calls it. I found a really fun product for little girl dress up time. I stumbled upon Kiss nail stickers for kids and they even have stickers for toe nails. They are little press on nails with a sticker attached so they stick right on and the best part they come off easy after play time with just a little water. My daughter loves wearing these so she can look fancy while digging in the dirt and pushing her little brother off the couch or swings. These would be great for a little girl dress up tea party.

Beach Proof your mani/pedi.

Source: makeherup.com

On the hunt for the secret to making your manicure and pedicure last during the beach season? Neri Ortega, nail expert of Butterfly Studio Salon, recommends the following for a long lasting, perfect manicure without chipping:

1. Following a hand massage, it is vital to clean the nail bed twice with acetone or acetone free nail polish remover to make sure that there are no emollients left on the nail- a clean, oil free nail bed is the most important part of a lasting manicure, as it creates a clean surface to begin on.
2. Continue with a protein based base coat- this is key in keeping polish from chipping. A strengthening treatment like OPI’s Nail Envy, works wonderfully to keep nails strong, and polish from chipping.

3. Following the application of polish, a good basic top coat is needed. Neri recommends Essie, and prefers classic top coats over “quick dry” as she finds that quick dry top coats tend to peel faster.

For a great sumer color try:

Pushing back cuticles rather than cutting them will also help a manicure last longer. To keep nail polish looking shiny and new, and cuticles from looking dull and ashy, she recommends a good cuticle moisturizer like Solar Oil- the oil treatment will multi-task to keep your manicure going for extra days.

With tips this easy, the hardest part will be choosing your favorite color!

Here comes the sun!

greenway-park.jpg

After a lot of rain we were treated to a beautiful weekend in Oregon on Saturday it hit 74 degrees so Jocelyn and I took our kids to the park for a walk and a picnic. As I strolled the trail in my sandals I noticed my feet were in dire need of a pedicure.

Since I am trying to be a little better this year with my spending habits so my hubby isn’t completely gray by 30. I decided to give myself a pedicure and it actually came out pretty great. I used the Red Professional pedicure kit it’s under 10 bucks and has everything you need to pamper yourself with an at home pedicure. It comes in the perfect little bag to keep all your tools together, it would also be great to take with you to the nail salon if you are getting a pedicure to ensure you are getting clean tools.
